Help; something we all need and yet all too often resent. In this vast interconnected world what we can do together, shines much brighter than what we do alone. In my life I have had to learn how to accept assistance doing a great many things, which is not always easy. I personally can be a rather stubborn individual, as many who know me can attest to, but needing help is part of my daily reality. I have come to realize over the years, that depending on others does not make us weak or lesser in any way.
As the popular quote says:
"You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you."
Helping others is something we all should strive to do, we may not all be able to contribute in the same way but everything done to make someone else's life better makes a difference. When coming to someone's aid, we must remember to not judge or pity them. Put yourself in their shoes, would you like to be looked down upon for needing a hand? It is important to realize that it may not be easy for someone to ask for or to be helped, we should always be respectful and courteous. It is crucial to not develop an attitude of superiority when assisting others, it destroys the sincerity of the act. Helping someone does not make you better than them, just like being helped does not diminish your worth.
When thinking about help, consider how mutual dependence occurs in nature. For example, the Goby fish and it's symbiotic relationship with the Pistol shrimp. The shrimp, who is nearly blind digs a burrow where itself and the fish live, in exchange for it's protection. When danger approaches the Goby is able warn the shrimp by constantly staying in contact with it's antennae. Whether it's an evolutionary advantage in the wild or just simply the right thing to do for someone in need, working together makes the world a better place. The majority of great human accomplishments in history were not done alone, rather in groups of people working for a common goal. The wisest minds know that they cannot do everything, so they surround themselves with others that can help them meet their vision, whatever it may be. There is no shame in the help I receive, it lets me live my life. I am eternally grateful for everyone who has made my life easier through their actions. I truly, get by with a little help from my friends.
