Family; one of the most frustrating, beautiful and infinitely important parts of life. Families can single-handedly bring out the best and worst of out of each of us. I, by complete chance was born into an incredible family with and endless well of unconditional love. It would be a flat out lie to say my family is perfect, no one can claim that their's is. There is nothing more human than imperfection—it gives us character, makes us real. Families are not defined by their flaws but by their triumphs, the overcoming of their struggles. These people that we are inextricably connected to, make us who we are. Without a doubt I can say, each member of my family has made me a better person in their own unique way.
A truly beautiful thing about family is that it can come in so many different shapes and sizes. Sometimes families can have two dads or two moms, others can have just one parent. Families can be born into or found later, they can be people we are related to and people that love us all the same. No two families in this world are alike, just like the people they are made up of. There is truly so much beauty in the diversity of life. The one thing that all families have in common though, is the ability to get on each other's nerves at times. Nothing shows the duality of the human spirit better than family dynamics. Family members can simultaneously be the most judgmental but supportive people and the planet, your biggest fans and biggest haters. It is sometimes so easy to treat the people that we love, worse than our greatest enemy, it is the cost of closeness. There are plenty of things that I have said, have done to my family that I wish I could take back. The Mort family has had their fair share of fights but at the end of the day the love is always there. I would describe my family as a pride of lions; we are loud, fiercely protective and extremely loyal. We may roar from time to time but we always have each others backs. Each of us in this world at some point or another, take our families for granted and treat them poorly.
I believe sometimes we all need to take a moment and ask ourselves would we treat a stranger the same way we treat our own family? It is also so important to remind your family that you love them and how much they matter to you, don't wait. I strongly believe in my heart that it is never too late to tell your family how you feel. There is so much power in being at peace with this strange grouping of humans that make your life miserable and beautiful all at the same time. Putting time and thought into your family, I feel is worth more than any dollar amount in the world. So I say here's to family; all the ones we can hug and all of those who are no longer with us, for they are never truly gone.
