With Liberty And Justice For All

We have come to a crossroads in the United States and like so many in the past comes down to equality. The equality I speak of is that of marriage, something that without a doubt everyone deserves a chance at. This is not just another political squabble or academic debate topic, it is a human right that I feel very strongly about.
For a country supposedly built on the notion freedom for all people, so very many have had to fight tooth and nail for each of those rights. Our nation is slowly veering towards equality, state by state lead by the current of the people. Currently seventeen states, including New York have paved the way towards fairness by legalizing same-sex marriage but the rest of the US still clings to antiquated laws. Battle after battle has been won but the war for civil rights rages on. The sad truth is we still live in a country plagued by hate and ignorance. Children still call each other "gay" as if it were an insult. Pundits and politicians still openly condemn peoples sexual orientations as if were a choice. Men and women still scream out poison and hate in the streets. Religious   groups still cry out suffering and damnation for those who are gay. Young people still beaten, murdered and driven to suicide just for who they love. There are still thousands upon thousands of people who feel unsafe every single day just for being who they are. Acceptance is not a novelty it is a necessity.
We all must choose to cast out the culture of homophobia and callous apathy. If we genuinely want things to get better people cannot just sit back, do nothing and say: "that's just the way it is". The road to a better future hinges on the one day we can truly control and that is today.
Now is the time to educate your children, your parents.
Now is the time to be an advocate, an ally.
Now is the time to show support and understanding.
Right now is the time to shout: "I can make a difference!".
