Trivial Pursuits
Playing trivia at local bars and restaurants has become a consistent pass-time of mine, week in and week out. Trivia in recent years has grow to a booming Central New York activity with multiple companies and locations. I was first introduced to this hobby when my friend and neighbor, Mike Conese invited me to go with his friends and him a few years back. Early on I was the rookie, only playing occasionally when Mike was home from college, eventually my brother, Andy started to come along. Over time unfortunately, our team got a little smaller because of busy schedules but my brother and I ended up being the trivia night regulars.
These days not much gets in the way of going to trivia, we've braved negative temperatures and bars closing but we never let it stop us. Despite our unwavering commitment to the game, including never cheating, our skills are actually quite terrible. We have improved slightly since we diversified our team a little(thanks Jim!) but still seem to implode after about fifteen questions—the third round curse. Victory may elude us week after week but we keep coming back for more and we always manage to have a good time. Win or lose, it's all about the experience and time spent with friends as it is in life. Trivia is actually a lot like life if you think about it.
Each of us are faced with questions, choices that we many times don't know the right answer to. Playing trivia you realize rather quickly that you don't know everything, no one truly can; there will always be people out there that know a lot more than you do and that's perfectly alright. In this game everyone is a genius. But if you judge an engineer for their ability to answer 80's pop-culture questions, they will go their whole lives thinking they are bad at trivia. Each of us have our own strengths and facets of knowledge. Everyone may not get their picture with the trophy or that gift certificate but we all should at give it a shot. After all, life is just a series of longshots, gut feelings, lucky guesses, wrong answers and bad choices but every once in a while we get a sure thing.
